Kolkata, 04 May (H.S.): In a major political upset in the West Bengal Assembly Election 2026, BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari defeated Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee from the high-profile Bhabanipur seat by a margin of 15,114 votes.

The Bhabanipur contest witnessed a fiercely close fight from the outset. Mamata Banerjee led in the initial rounds of counting, but the trend began to reverse in the afternoon. Adhikari had earlier predicted that he would take the lead after the 10th round, and the results appeared to validate his claim. After 18 rounds, Adhikari had secured 67,239 votes, while Banerjee had polled 56,245. The margin eventually widened to 15,114 by the final round.

This victory is being seen as a significant milestone in Adhikari’s political career. After defeating Banerjee in Nandigram in 2021, he has now repeated the feat in her home turf Bhabanipur, dealing a major blow to the Trinamool Congress in South Kolkata.

Following the win, Suvendu Adhikari described the result as a “victory of Bengal’s pride and good governance.” On the other hand, Mamata Banerjee’s defeat in her own constituency is being viewed as a major setback for the Trinamool Congress.

Political observers believe that the Bhabanipur result could further strengthen the BJP’s path toward forming the government in the state.
