Research Scholar at IIT Ropar Accuses Professor of Sexual Harassment; Probe Underway

Ropar, 04 May (H.S.): A research scholar at the Indian Institute of Technology Ropar has accused her academic guide of sexual harassment, coercion, and physical assault. The student has filed a formal complaint with the local police, prompting an investigation into the matter.

According to the complainant, the professor allegedly pressured her to accompany him alone on a research trip. When she refused, he allegedly threatened to remove her from the research program. The student also claimed that she was subjected to physical violence and inappropriate demands, which she refused to comply with.

Police officials confirmed that a case has been registered at the Ropar police station, and an inquiry is being conducted based on the victim’s statement.

Meanwhile, the institute administration has taken interim action. Director Rajeev Ahuja stated that the complaint was received on April 29, following which an internal inquiry was initiated immediately. The accused professor has been placed on forced leave for two months, and the matter has been referred to the institute’s Internal Complaints Committee (ICC).

The administration also assured that steps have been taken to ensure the student’s safety and to prevent disruption to her academic work. Interim relief was reportedly provided within 24 hours of receiving the complaint.

However, the student has expressed dissatisfaction with the institute’s response. She alleged that despite assurances, her research guide has not yet been changed. Additionally, she claimed that she was called late at night and pressured to record her statement.

The police investigation is ongoing, and further action is expected after the submission of the institute’s internal report.
