Guwahati, 04 May (HS). The BJP-led alliance has secured a historic mandate in the 2026 Assam assembly elections, winning 102 out of 126 seats and returning to power for a third consecutive term in the state.
The victory marks a significant political milestone, surpassing previous records in the state. While the Congress had earlier achieved three consecutive wins in 2001, 2006, and 2011, it had never secured such an overwhelming mandate. The BJP, by retaining power for the third straight term, managed to convert anti-incumbency sentiments into a strong wave of support through its governance and development agenda.
According to the Election Commission, the BJP alone won 82 seats, setting a new benchmark. Its alliance partners, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), secured 10 seats each, contributing to the alliance’s commanding tally.
The Congress managed to win 19 seats, while the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) faced a major setback, securing only two seats. The Raijor Dal, contesting as part of the Congress alliance, improved its performance by increasing its tally from one to two seats. The Trinamool Congress (TMC) also opened its account in Assam with one seat.
In terms of vote share, the BJP garnered around 37.81% of the votes, while the Congress secured approximately 29.84%, reflecting a clear lead for the ruling alliance in both seats and popular support.-----------
