
Darjeeling, 04 May (H.S.): The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) maintained a strong lead in North Bengal as counting for the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections progressed on Monday, triggering celebrations among party workers and supporters.
The BJP surged ahead from the initial rounds of postal ballot counting and steadily consolidated its lead across several constituencies. North Bengal has traditionally been a stronghold of the party, and early trends indicated that it was retaining its dominance in the region.
Party supporters were seen celebrating in districts such as Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar, smearing each other with colours and distributing sweets.
According to available trends, the BJP was leading in more than 40 seats in North Bengal, improving on its 2021 tally of 34 seats in the region.
The party also appeared to be performing strongly in the tea garden belt, which comprises around 22 constituencies across Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar districts. BJP candidates were reported to be leading by significant margins in several of these seats.
Constituencies such as Siliguri, Matigara-Naxalbari, Rajganj, Jalpaiguri, Nagrakata, Dabgram-Phulbari, Cooch Behar South, Sitalkuchi, Dinhata and Kalchini were among those where BJP candidates were ahead.
