Bhubaneswar, 31 May (H.S.): Baranga Police Station Inspector-in-Charge (IIC) Niranjan Behera has been transferred to the office of the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Cuttack, following allegations of custodial torture involving a local youth. The transfer comes amid growing public outrage and ongoing investigations into the incident.

According to police sources, the transfer order was issued a day after villagers staged protests and blocked a National Highway demanding action against the alleged custodial assault. Officials stated that the transfer was made to ensure a fair and impartial inquiry into the allegations.

As part of the administrative reshuffle, Purighat Police Station IIC Biswaranjan Nayak has been given additional charge of Baranga Police Station.

The controversy erupted after allegations surfaced that a youth, identified as Rakesh, was illegally detained at Baranga Police Station for three days and subjected to severe physical assault while in custody. The alleged torture reportedly left him seriously injured.

Family members and local residents further alleged that police admitted the youth to a private hospital without informing his relatives, raising suspicions that an attempt was made to conceal the incident.

The allegations triggered widespread public resentment in the area, with local residents and villagers staging demonstrations outside the police station and demanding strict action against those responsible. Protesters also sought a transparent investigation and justice for the victim.
