Chandigarh, 30 May (H.S.): Punjab has intensified preparations for hosting the prestigious Hockey Asian Champions Trophy later this year, with Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann on Saturday reviewing the arrangements for the mega international sporting event and directing officials to ensure that all infrastructure and organisational works are completed well ahead of schedule.

Chairing a high-level meeting in Chandigarh, the Chief Minister instructed officers to complete all preparations before September and stressed that no effort should be spared in making the tournament a grand success. He directed the formation of an organising committee comprising experts, former players and other stakeholders to ensure the timely execution of all arrangements related to the championship.

CM Mann also approved the constitution of a high-powered committee of senior officers to regularly monitor the progress of ongoing works at the venues in Jalandhar and Mohali. He said every aspect of the event should be planned meticulously so that Punjab can host the championship in a world-class manner.

Reviewing infrastructure requirements, the Chief Minister directed officials to upgrade the stadiums in Jalandhar and Mohali with the latest facilities in accordance with international standards. He assured full support to the Indian Hockey Federation and said the Punjab Government would leave no stone unturned in ensuring the successful conduct of the tournament.

Describing Punjab as the traditional nursery of Indian hockey, Mann said hosting an international event of this magnitude would further encourage young players to take up the sport and strengthen the state’s sporting culture. He noted that Punjab has produced several legendary hockey players who have brought laurels to the country at the international level.

The Chief Minister reiterated that the state government would make comprehensive arrangements related to security, logistics, accommodation and other facilities for players, officials and visiting delegations. He said the top six performing hockey teams from Asia would participate in the championship, making it one of the most significant sporting events ever hosted by Punjab.

Calling the event a landmark moment in the state’s sporting history, Mann said Punjab had never before hosted an international hockey tournament of such scale despite its immense contribution to the sport. He described the opportunity as a matter of pride for the people of Punjab and expressed confidence that the championship would help revive the state’s glorious sporting legacy.

“The Hockey Asian Champions Trophy will not only showcase Punjab’s hospitality and organisational capabilities but will also inspire a new generation of athletes to pursue excellence in sports,” he said.

Chief Secretary KAP Sinha, Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister Dr Ravi Bhagat, Punjab Hockey President Nitin Kohli and other senior officials were present during the review meeting.
