Rains in Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram,03 May (H.S.):The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast widespread rain and thundershowers across Kerala till May 8, offering partial relief from the sweltering summer heat that gripped the state in recent weeks.

As part of the alert, the IMD has issued a yellow warning for four districts — Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, and Idukki — on Sunday. These regions are likely to receive heavy rainfall ranging between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm within a 24-hour period. The weather agency has also cautioned that thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds with speeds of 40–50 kmph are likely across the state until May 6.

Authorities have warned that the adverse weather could disrupt normal life. Heavy rain may lead to reduced visibility and traffic congestion, particularly during peak hours. Incidents such as waterlogging, uprooting of trees, and falling branches are expected in isolated areas, potentially affecting road movement and increasing travel time. There is also a risk of damage to power infrastructure, which could result in temporary outages.

The IMD has highlighted the possibility of landslides in vulnerable hilly regions and urged residents to remain vigilant. Farmers have also been advised to take precautions, as standing crops — especially those nearing harvest — may suffer damage due to heavy rain and strong winds.

In addition, the threat of lightning poses a significant safety concern. People have been urged to avoid open spaces during thunderstorms and seek shelter in safe, sturdy structures. Officials have also advised the public to follow traffic advisories and refrain from staying in weak or dilapidated buildings.

Meanwhile, high temperatures persisted in parts of the state before the onset of widespread rain. Punalur in Kollam recorded the highest temperature at 38°C on Saturday, followed by Palakkad at 37.9°C. Kannur and Kochi airports reported 36.4°C and 36°C, respectively.
