Vellappally backs LDF return in Kerala, says BJP will open account

Thiruvananthapuram, 03 May (H.S.):SNDP Yogam general secretary Vellappally Natesan on Sunday said he favours the return of the Left Democratic Front (LDF) to power in Kerala, asserting that the ruling front has delivered on multiple fronts during its tenure.

Speaking to reporters after a reception organised by the SNDP Paravur Union to mark his Padma Bhushan honour, Natesan said his support for the LDF was based on “clear and practical reasons.” He maintained that the government had implemented several welfare and development initiatives that benefited different sections of society.

He also expressed confidence that the BJP would open its account in the Kerala Assembly and emerge as a stronger political force in the coming years. “The BJP will make corrections and grow as a significant force in the state,” he said.

Taking a swipe at the Opposition United Democratic Front (UDF), Natesan said internal conflicts would be inevitable if the coalition comes to power. “There will be disputes within the UDF over leadership and governance, which could affect stability,” he remarked.

Referring to the leadership debate within the Congress-led front, he questioned the party’s high command system, suggesting that the Indian Union Muslim League was exerting undue influence. “Is there no high command in the Congress? The League seems to be acting like one,” he said, in a critical tone.

On the chief ministerial question, Natesan said that if the UDF were to win, the Congress high command should decide the leader. However, he made it clear that if the LDF retains power, Pinarayi Vijayan should continue as Chief Minister. “Anyone who has closely observed him will not criticise him,” he added, while noting that the Chief Minister’s Office could improve its functioning.

Dismissing UDF claims of a sweeping victory, he said the front would not cross the 100-seat mark. He also took a dig at Opposition leader VD Satheesan, advising him not to “go into political exile,” while acknowledging that he is a capable public figure.
