Kathmandu, 03 May (H.S.): Continuous rainfall and landslides have completely blocked three major highways in Nepal, trapping hundreds of passenger buses and freight trucks along the routes.
Uninterrupted rains over the past week have disrupted the BP Highway linking Kathmandu and Janakpur, rendering the route fully impassable.
A temporary diversion constructed along the highway in the Sindhuli region has been washed away by the downpour. The traffic police have imposed a complete ban on movement along this highway.
The Mahendra Highway (commonly known as Kanti Highway) has also been blocked at Pandu in the Lalitpur district following a landslide. According to the Kathmandu Traffic Police Office, vehicular movement on the Kathmandu–Hetauda route has been severely affected after the landslide occurred around 5 a.m.
A bridge on the Postal Highway, which connects the Tarai–Madhesh region, has collapsed, blocking the entire highway. A notice issued by the Madhesh Province Traffic Office stated that the bridge connecting Dhanusha and Siraha districts has snapped, disrupting all traffic. Hundreds of vehicles passing through this section are stranded, mostly public passenger buses, some freight trucks, and oil tankers. Police said alternative diversion routes are being constructed to restore traffic.
Meanwhile, the under‑construction Suryavinayak–Sanga road has become slippery and difficult for vehicles to navigate.
