Malappuram, 03 May (H.S.):

The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging the Central government to bear the additional ₹10,000 being charged from Hajj pilgrims due to the recent surge in fuel prices, describing it as an undue burden on devotees.

In the letter, IUML National President K M Khader Mohideen called for immediate intervention, noting that many pilgrims come from economically weaker sections and may struggle to arrange the extra amount at short notice.

The hike in charges follows a sharp increase in airfares triggered by rising tensions in West Asia. Initially, airlines had sought an additional amount of nearly ₹30,000 per pilgrim. However, after discussions between the Central Hajj Committee and the Ministry of Minority Affairs, the extra charge was reduced to around ₹10,000.

According to the Central Hajj Committee, pilgrims have been asked to remit the additional amount by May 15. Officials have indicated that those facing financial constraints may be granted more time to complete the payment. It has also been clarified that delays in payment will not lead to cancellation of the pilgrimage.

The IUML pointed out that the current geopolitical situation has resulted in an unforeseen financial burden on pilgrims and reiterated that the Centre should step in to absorb the additional cost. It stressed that the Hajj pilgrimage, being a significant religious obligation, should not become financially prohibitive due to circumstances beyond the control of pilgrims.

The sudden increase has caused concern among many prospective pilgrims, who are now making efforts to arrange the additional funds even as global uncertainties continue to impact travel costs.
