Thiruvananthapuram, 03 May (H.S.):Senior Congress leader K. C. Venugopal is emerging as a key contender in the race for Chief Minister if the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) secures victory in the 2026 Kerala Assembly elections, with growing indications that backing from the party high command could prove decisive.

With counting day drawing closer, internal deliberations within the Indian National Congress have intensified, and Venugopal’s name has gained prominence due to his blend of organisational clout, administrative experience, and grassroots political credentials. His proximity to senior leadership, particularly Rahul Gandhi, is widely seen as a crucial advantage in a contest where central leadership is expected to play a defining role.

Venugopal’s political journey began in Kannur, long regarded as a politically sensitive stronghold, where he rose through the ranks of the Kerala Students Union (KSU). Serving as KSU state president from 1988 to 1993, he was actively involved in student movements during a period marked by intense political clashes, earning a reputation as a committed grassroots leader.

He later led the Youth Congress in Kerala for nearly a decade, spearheading statewide campaigns and protest movements. His transition to electoral politics saw him elected as MLA from Alappuzha in 1996, a significant breakthrough in a constituency considered a Left bastion. He went on to serve multiple terms as both MLA and Member of Parliament, consolidating his political standing.

In governance, Venugopal held key portfolios, including Tourism and Devaswom in Kerala, and later served as Union Minister of State in the United Progressive Alliance government led by Manmohan Singh.

Party insiders indicate that his strong acceptability within the high command could give him an edge over other contenders such as V. D. Satheesan and Ramesh Chennithala. While no official announcement has been made, the Congress leadership is expected to take the final call if the UDF returns to power, with Venugopal firmly in the reckoning.
