IAF Mi 17 V5 safely rescues 2 survivors after water tank staircase collapse

Siddharthnagar,

03 May (HS): “An IAF Mi 17 V5 from Central Air Command (CAC) was dispatched to

rescue two trapped youngsters who were caught on top of a water tank in

Sidharth Nagar, near Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, at the request of state

government officials. The youngsters were stuck in the night since the water

tank's ladder was destroyed. The rescue effort once again demonstrates the

IAF's professionalism and commitment to save lives by responding quickly in

times of need,” reads a post on X by Central Air Command, Indian Air Force.

What

Happened: Teens climb rusting tank for reels, staircase collapses, one

adolescent dies, two injured, two stranded overnight, mud blocks rescue, teams

battle, and IAF chopper safely removes survivors. Why it matters: One life was

lost due to social media, and unsafe structures endanger the public on a

regular basis.

A 10-year-old

kid died after a derelict water tank's stairs collapsed, leading three of the

five youngsters on it to fall, authorities said on Sunday. The event occurred

on Saturday after the youngsters climbed the structure. Two additional

individuals who fell are still in severe condition. According to sources, an

army chopper rescued two kids who were stuck on the tank early Sunday.

According

to Siddharthnagar District Magistrate Shivasharanappa GN, an army helicopter

was requested from Gorakhpur after negotiations with the Chief Minister's

Office and Relief Commissioner Dr Hrishikesh Bhaskar Yashod. The trapped

youngsters were rescued about 5.20 a.m. in an operation that lasted around 15

minutes and were later sent to Gorakhpur for treatment.

Efforts

were undertaken overnight to build an alternate path to reach the stranded

youngsters, but rain interrupted the work, forcing officials to seek airborne

assistance, he added, thanking the chief minister. According to local

corporator Satish Rastogi, the disused water tank in the Kashiram Housing

neighborhood was constructed roughly 30 years ago and has been considered

dangerous. Despite the limitations, youngsters frequently climbed it to shoot

social media videos. On Saturday, five kids climbed the tank. While descending,

the staircase crumbled, leading three of them to fall: Golu (12), Sunny (14),

and Siddharth (10). They were hurried to a medical college, where Siddharth was

pronounced dead upon arrival, while the other two were sent to Gorakhpur in

severe condition. The remaining two youngsters, Pavan (14) and Shaban (12), who

were stuck on top of the tank, were recovered safely, according to the district

magistrate.

Why

It Matters: One life lost for social media, unsafe structures putting the

public at danger on a regular basis. Analysis: Poor maintenance, insufficient

safety barriers, delay due to topography, access gaps; fix: inspect ancient

structures, limit entry. Advice: Avoid abandoned or hazardous structures, and

report any problematic public infrastructure immediately. Bottom Line:

Negligence and thrill seeking killed, accountability demanded for safety failings.

Finally, why are these unsafe constructions still open?
