New Delhi, May 28 (H.S.): Domestic stock markets are closed today on the occasion of Bakrid. Due to the holiday, no trading activity is taking place today on the Bombay Stock Exchange and the National Stock Exchange of India. Similar to the BSE and NSE, trading on the Multi Commodity Exchange of India (MCX) is also suspended during the first session of the day, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., owing to the Bakrid holiday. However, normal trading will resume in the evening session on MCX from 5 p.m. until 11:30 p.m. and 11:55 p.m.
According to information provided by the stock exchanges, Bakrid has been declared a trading holiday across multiple segments on the BSE, including the Equity Segment, Equity Derivatives Segment, Currency Derivatives Segment, New Debt Segment – Reporting, Settlement and Trading Platform (NDS-RST), Tri-Party Repo, Electronic Gold Receipts (EGR), and Commodity Derivatives Segment.
Similarly, the NSE has also declared a holiday across all segments due to Bakrid, including Equities, Equity Derivatives, Corporate Bonds, New Debt Segments, Negotiated Trade Reporting Platform, Mutual Funds, Securities Lending and Borrowing Schemes, Currency Derivatives, Commodity Derivatives, and Interest Rate Derivatives. No trading activity will take place in these segments today.
According to the stock market holiday calendar, following today’s Bakrid holiday in May, the market will remain closed for only one day in June — June 26 — on account of Muharram. There will be no additional holidays in July and August apart from regular weekly offs. In September, the market will remain closed on September 14 for Ganesh Chaturthi.
Thereafter, the stock market will remain shut on October 2 on account of Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti. Another holiday will fall on October 20 for Dussehra, while the market will remain closed on November 10 for Bali Pratipada. In November, there will also be a holiday on November 24 for Shri Guru Nanak Dev Guruparab. Similarly, the final market holiday of the year will be observed on December 25 for Christmas.
As per the holiday calendar, a total of 16 market holidays have been announced for 2026, excluding weekly Saturday and Sunday closures. The highest number of holidays during the year fell in March. The market remained closed on March 3 for Holi, on March 26 for Ram Navami, and on March 31 for Shri Mahavir Jayanti. Following March, the market was closed on April 3 for Good Friday and again on April 14 for Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Jayanti. Likewise, no trading took place on May 1 on account of Maharashtra Day.
This year, Independence Day on August 15 falls on a Saturday. Similarly, Diwali will fall on Sunday, November 8. Since both dates coincide with weekend holidays, they have not been included separately in the stock market holiday calendar. However, despite Diwali falling on a Sunday, Muhurat Trading will still be conducted on that day. The timings for Muhurat Trading will be announced later.
