– India Suffer 0-2 Defeat in Semi-Final; Naufal PN and Ricky Shabong Make Senior Team Debut

London, May 28 (H.S.): The Indian football team suffered a 0-2 defeat against Jamaica in the second semi-final of the Unity Cup 2026 on Wednesday. In the match played at The Valley Stadium, Jamaica’s A. Courtney Clarke and Kaheim Dixon scored the goals.

With this victory, Jamaica advanced to the final, where they will face Nigeria. Nigeria had defeated Zimbabwe 2-0 in the first semi-final. Meanwhile, the Indian team will now take on Zimbabwe in the third-place playoff on May 30.

Memorable Match for Indian Players

The match marked several important milestones for Indian players. Naufal PN and Ricky Shabong made their senior national team debuts, while Edmund Lalrindika earned his first start in the playing XI.

India was playing an international match on British soil for the first time since 2002, but the team struggled to find rhythm from the very beginning of the contest.

Jamaica launched a swift counterattack in the eighth minute. Indian goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu initially produced an excellent save, but the Indian defence failed to clear the ball completely. Courtney Clarke capitalised on the loose ball and fired a superb shot into the top corner of the net.

Jamaica, ranked 71st in the FIFA rankings, continued to play aggressively thereafter. In the 17th minute, Kaheim Dixon had an opportunity to double the lead, but Gurpreet made another brilliant save to keep India in the game.

India showed some improvement in passing during the closing stages of the first half, but the team’s shortcomings in the final third remained evident. Ryan Williams, Lallianzuala Chhangte, and Edmund Lalrindika failed to make a significant impact.

India Attempted a Comeback in the Second Half

The Indian side appeared more aggressive after halftime. In the 53rd minute, India got a golden chance to equalise when Roshan capitalised on a mistake by Jamaica’s defence and goalkeeper to set up Rahim Ali. However, Rahim Ali was ruled offside, and Chhangte’s goal was disallowed.

Thereafter, India intensified efforts to make a comeback. Coach Khalid Jamil’s side pushed higher up the field and mounted pressure on Jamaica, briefly taking control of the match.

Kaheim Dixon Ends India’s Hopes

Just when India appeared to be moving towards a comeback, Kaheim Dixon produced a moment of individual brilliance in the 78th minute to score Jamaica’s second goal. He dribbled past Akash Mishra with an excellent move from outside the box and calmly slotted the ball past Gurpreet Singh Sandhu into the net.

After conceding the second goal, the Indian team lost momentum, and Jamaica comfortably saw out the match to seal their place in the final.
