Goyal Emphasises Stronger Economic Ties, CEPA Negotiations During Canada Visit


New Delhi, May 28 (H.S.): Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal on Thursday concluded his three-day official visit to Canada, aimed at deepening bilateral economic engagement and accelerating negotiations for the India-Canada Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA).

In a statement, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry said that Piyush Goyal led the largest-ever Indian business delegation to Canada, comprising representatives from more than 100 Indian companies. During the visit, the Commerce and Industry Minister held a series of high-level meetings with policymakers, investors, business leaders, academicians, and members of the Indo-Canadian community in Toronto and Ottawa.

The primary objective of the visit was to strengthen cooperation in the sectors of trade, technology, clean energy, infrastructure, innovation, and advanced manufacturing. During the discussions, India and Canada also reiterated their commitment to expanding bilateral trade to 50 billion US dollars by 2030, from the current level of 8.5 billion dollars.

The key focus of the minister’s visit was to expedite the ongoing CEPA negotiations and further strengthen ties in the fields of technology, manufacturing, and clean energy. Piyush Goyal also held discussions with academicians, the Premier of Ontario, and business leaders to promote investment and enhance collaboration.

During the visit, Piyush Goyal participated in several significant and impactful meetings in Toronto with representatives from academia, innovation sectors, government bodies, business councils, institutional investors, and the Indian diaspora. These interactions further reinforced the sustained momentum in the India-Canada economic partnership and highlighted India’s emergence as a major global destination for investment, technological collaboration, and long-term strategic partnerships.
