
Kolkata, 27 May (H.S.): Acclaimed Kolkata-based filmmaker Anik Dutta passed away on Wednesday at the age of 66. News of his critical injury had surfaced earlier in the afternoon. According to reports, he fell from the terrace of his former wife’s residence in Hindustan Park and was rushed to a private hospital in Dhakuria, where doctors declared him dead.
Hospital sources said his body would be sent to SSKM Hospital for post-mortem examination. Following the incident, police reached the residential building and initiated an investigation. Preliminary indications suggest it may have been an accident, though police have not yet issued any official statement. Forensic experts are also expected to inspect the site.
Just a few days ago, on May 22, Anik Dutta had celebrated his birthday and shared nostalgic memories on social media. Before entering the film industry, he had worked in the advertising world for nearly two decades and directed several well-known advertising films.
Dutta gained widespread recognition in 2012 with his critically acclaimed film Bhooter Bhabishyat, which drew attention for its unique concept and presentation. He later directed films such as Ashchorjyo Prodeep, Meghnad Badh Rahasya, Bhobishyoter Bhoot, Borunbabur Bondhu and Aparajito. His film “Aparajito” had also remained at the centre of controversy. His last widely discussed film was Joto Kando Kolkatatei.
Anik Dutta was also known as a cultural personality associated with Left-leaning ideological circles. Following news of his death, several members of Tollywood and the political fraternity reached the hospital. Producer Firdousul Hasan said official formalities would be completed after the arrival of family members, while Deepsita Dhar described the incident as deeply shocking and tragic.
