Singapore, May 27 (H.S.): Indian badminton player H.S. Prannoy produced a sensational performance at the Singapore Open Super 750 tournament, registering a major upset by defeating Indonesia’s World No. 5 Jonatan Christie. Prannoy secured a hard-fought 10-21, 21-12, 21-18 victory in the opening round to advance to the second round.
After losing the first game, Prannoy made an impressive comeback and maintained aggressive play to claim the next two games. In the deciding game, he displayed remarkable composure during crucial pressure moments.
However, India’s Malvika Bansod suffered defeat in the women’s singles event. Chinese Taipei’s Lin Hsiang-Ti defeated her 11-21, 21-19, 21-12 to knock her out of the tournament.
In men’s singles, Kidambi Srikanth also failed to progress beyond the opening round. He suffered a narrow 20-22, 21-19, 17-21 defeat against Singapore’s Loh Kean Yew in a closely contested match.
In mixed doubles, the Indian pair of Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto registered an impressive victory. The duo defeated Malaysia’s Wong Tien Ci and Lim Chiew Sien 21-14, 20-22, 21-13 to advance to the next round.
Meanwhile, India’s star shuttler Lakshya Sen is scheduled to play his opening-round match against China’s Lu Guangzu later in the day.
