Kolkata, 27 May (H.S.): TMC MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar has announced her resignation from all organisational posts in the All India Trinamool Congress. The Barasat MP on Wednesday wrote to state party president Subrata Bakshi requesting to be relieved of all responsibilities, including the post of chairperson of the Trinamool Mahila Congress.
Just three days earlier, she had stepped down from her district president’s post. In her letter, Kakoli expressed deep concern over several corruption allegations that have surfaced in the state, including the ration scam, teacher recruitment scam, and other administrative irregularities, saying these incidents had created widespread public anger and distrust.
A former student of R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital, Kakoli also referred to the 2024 rape and murder case involving a woman doctor. She wrote that allegations of attempts to suppress the case had shaken society and deeply affected her personally.
Without naming anyone directly, Kakoli also appeared to target party MP Kalyan Banerjee in her letter. She stated that there was no meaning in continuing in a position where “an uneducated and uncivilised” MP’s inappropriate behaviour toward a woman parliamentarian could not be stopped and where no support or sympathy was received from the senior leadership.
She also raised questions over the role of election strategy consultancy I-PAC within the party. Kakoli wrote that if an opaque and undemocratic influence gains dominance over the organisation, it would not be a healthy sign for the party’s ideology and traditions.
The MP clarified that her decision was not driven by personal anger or resentment. She said she would continue to work as an ordinary party worker and had distanced herself from organisational posts out of moral responsibility toward democracy and the people.
Recently, the Trinamool Congress had removed her from the post of chief whip of the parliamentary party and reassigned the responsibility to Kalyan Banerjee. Following that development, Kakoli had expressed her displeasure on social media, writing, “Known since 1976 and politically active since 1984. This is the reward for four decades of loyalty.”
Political circles were also abuzz on Tuesday after Kakoli attended an administrative meeting convened by Suvendu Adhikari. She had then remarked that administration belongs to everyone and should not be viewed through partisan politics. Suvendu, meanwhile, had stated that his government would invite “special MPs” to administrative meetings and would change the earlier political culture.
