
Kolkata, 26 May (H.S.): A major accident occurred at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport on Tuesday after a lift inside the airport premises reportedly snapped and collapsed. At least two workers were seriously injured in the incident and were rushed to a hospital for treatment. The accident triggered panic and concern across the airport premises.
According to sources, Lift No. 34 at the airport had remained out of service for several days. Maintenance and repair work on the lift began on Tuesday morning. At around 1 pm, the lift suddenly collapsed, seriously injuring two workers who were engaged in the repair work.
The injured workers were immediately rescued and admitted to a nearby hospital, where they are currently undergoing treatment. The exact cause of the accident is yet to be determined. Airport authorities have initiated an investigation into the incident.
The accident has also raised serious concerns regarding passenger safety at the airport. At the domestic departure section of the airport, both buses and aerobridges are used to transport passengers to aircraft. Passengers using the aerobridge need to reach the upper floor through lifts or escalators.
It was during this maintenance work on Lift No. 34 that the accident took place on Tuesday afternoon.
