Guwahati, 26 May (HS): Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday said the BJP-led alliance scripted a “milestone in the state’s political history” by winning 102 Assembly seats with the support of nearly one crore voters in the last Assembly elections.
Replying to the debate on the Governor’s speech during the fourth day of the Assam Legislative Assembly session, the Chief Minister said the NDA alliance secured around 50% of the total votes polled in the state. He stated that the BJP received 82 lakh votes, while its allies Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) secured 14 lakh and 8 lakh votes respectively.
During his address in the House, Dr. Sarma also spoke on the issue of peace and stability in Assam, asserting that the state is progressing towards a violence-free environment. He said incidents of bomb blasts and protests disrupting normal life have significantly declined in recent years.
The Chief Minister further claimed that around 6,000 youths associated with armed movements have returned to the mainstream following various peace accords signed by the government. He added that the number of active ULFA cadres in the state has also reduced considerably.
