Kolkata, 26 May (H.S.): Union Home Minister Amit Shah is to visit West Bengal in the middle of June, with border security expected to be the primary focus of the tour. According to sources, the proposed visit will mainly concentrate on areas bordering Bangladesh. The Union Home Ministry has already begun preparations for the visit.
Sources said the Home Minister is expected to inspect border areas and review the prevailing security arrangements. He is also likely to hold high-level meetings on issues related to border security, illegal infiltration, cattle and narcotics smuggling, fake currency rackets and security vulnerabilities in border districts.
Apart from senior officials of the Border Security Force, Amit Shah is also expected to meet West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari and senior state administrative officials. District administrations and police officials in border areas have reportedly been instructed to remain alert ahead of the visit.
Political observers believe the visit is significant not only from an administrative perspective but also politically. Following the Assembly elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party is once again expected to highlight issues such as border security and illegal infiltration. The BJP has long accused the previous state government of failing to curb cross-border crimes and illegal infiltration, and Amit Shah’s proposed visit is being viewed as part of that broader political and security strategy.
Before visiting West Bengal, the Home Minister is scheduled to tour several other border states as well. On Sunday, he visited the Bikaner region of Rajasthan and on Monday inspected a forward post of the BSF while holding a security review meeting. He is also scheduled to visit Bhuj in Gujarat on May 29, where he will inspect the Harami Nala area.
A visit to the Tripura border region is also planned for June 5. According to central government sources, the primary objective of these visits is to strengthen surveillance along international borders, enhance technology-based security systems and improve coordination with the Border Security Force.
