Guwahati, 24 May (HS): Senior Congress leader Wajed Ali Choudhury on Sunday made a significant statement on the issue of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), asserting that the proposed law would not cause any harm to the Muslim community.
Talking to media taking a position that appears to differ from the stand of his party, Choudhury indirectly extended support to certain provisions of the UCC, particularly the clause relating to equal rights in property inheritance.
He stated that granting equal property rights to both sons and daughters is a justified and supportable move. According to him, ensuring equality in inheritance rights is in line with the principles of justice and social balance.
At the same time, Choudhury adopted a cautious tone on the larger political debate surrounding the UCC, remarking that he neither opposes nor openly supports the proposed legislation. His statement is being viewed as a strategic response amid the ongoing nationwide discussions over the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code.-----------
