Varanasi,
24 May (HS): A 17-year-old visitor from Sonbhadra died on Sunday following an
alleged altercation with private security personnels at Varanasi's Namo Ghat,
police said. Kotwali Assistant Commissioner of Police Vijay Pratap Singh stated
that four people were apprehended in the incident, which occurred in the early
hours of the day in the Namo Ghat region under the Adampur police station
boundaries. He stated that a group of Sonbhadra tourists had arrived to see the
ghat when an altercation erupted with private security personnel stationed at
the ramp entrance over an issue. The disagreement quickly escalated into
violence, injuring one individual, Rajesh Chintu, aged 17. The injured
youngster was transported to the divisional hospital, where doctors pronounced
him dead, Singh stated.
According
to family members and the injured, Rajesh and his friends Shivji, Brijesh,
Angad, and Rohit left their village around 8 pm on Saturday night to visit
Varanasi. They arrived at Namo Ghat around 3 am. It is alleged that the guards
at Gate No. 1 stopped them, saying the ghat was closed, and began abusing them.
When the young men protested, and started to return, nearly 10 to 12 guards
surrounded them.
It
is alleged that the guards beat all the youths for about ten minutes with
sticks, rods, and belts. During the assault, Rajesh, also known as Chintu, fell
to the ground with serious injuries. Shivji, Brijesh, Angad, and Rohit also
suffered serious injuries. After arriving at the scene, the police apprehended
four people in connection with the crime, he added. The ACP stated that CCTV
video from the surrounding area is being analyzed, and that any further legal
action will be taken based on the findings.
