Wayanad, 23 May (H.S.):The first accused in the alleged rape of a 20-year-old Malayali student in Bengaluru’s Madivala area has been arrested, marking a significant development in a case that had sparked concerns after the victim alleged police inaction and mishandling of her complaint.

The accused, identified as Hainas, a native of Sulthan Bathery in Kerala’s Wayanad district, was reportedly apprehended by Karnataka Police in Wayanad on Friday evening. Following his arrest, he was subjected to medical examination procedures before being brought to Bengaluru under a transit warrant. Police sources indicated that the accused is currently under judicial custody and will be produced before the court following further legal procedures.

According to the complaint filed by the victim, the alleged assault took place on May 12 at her residence in Madivala. The 20-year-old woman, a student in Bengaluru, had been pursuing her studies while also working part-time at a café run by her friends.

The victim alleged that she was unwell and resting at her residence on the day of the incident. She told investigators that Hainas arrived at the house and later allegedly entered her room while her friends had stepped out. She accused him of forcibly sexually assaulting her.

The case has also drawn attention due to allegations regarding the initial response of the police. The woman claimed that despite approaching the Madivala Police Station the very next day to file a complaint, police personnel initially refused to register a case. She further alleged that officers discouraged her from filing the complaint and subjected her to humiliation.

Following the alleged refusal, the victim and her friends approached the Bengaluru North-East Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) on May 18. Acting on the DCP’s instructions, Madivala police subsequently registered an FIR on the same day.

Investigators said Hainas was known to the victim and her friends. He had reportedly helped them identify a location and provided assistance when they started the café business. Police are continuing investigations into the case and are examining all aspects surrounding the incident.
