Barpeta (Assam), 23 May (HS): Assam Legislative Assembly Speaker Ranjeet Kumar Das on Saturday called for stringent legal measures against encroachers occupying Satra lands in the state, warning that strict action should be taken if such lands are not vacated voluntarily.

Speaking during his visit to Barpeta Satra along with his wife after being elected as Speaker of the Assembly, Das said those illegally occupying Satra lands should immediately leave the encroached areas. He stated that if the encroachers fail to vacate the lands, the government should not only carry out eviction drives but also enact tougher laws to punish the offenders.

Dass emphasized that permanent resolution of encroachment on Satra lands is necessary to protect Assam’s cultural and religious heritage. He urged the government to frame strict legislation to ensure that encroachers are penalised and such incidents do not recur in future.

The Speaker’s remarks come amid ongoing discussions in Assam over protection of Satra properties and eviction of illegal occupants from religious and institutional lands across the state.-----------
