Chandigarh, 23 May (H.S.): Amid rising temperatures and extreme heatwave conditions across Punjab, Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr. Balbir Singh on Saturday said that the state health department has already taken proactive measures to prevent and manage heat-related illnesses. He stated that all Civil Surgeons have been directed to operationalize dedicated Heat Stroke Management Units in District Hospitals, Sub-Division Hospitals, and Community Health Centres across the state. These specially designated wards have been equipped with cooling arrangements, including ice packs and cold IV fluids, while essential medicines, ORS packets, and emergency drugs are being stocked adequately in all public health facilities.

Dr. Balbir Singh said that extreme heat exposure can significantly increase the risk of heat stress, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke, besides worsening cardiovascular and respiratory diseases. He informed that ambulance services have also been strengthened to provide pre-hospital cooling treatment during patient transportation. The Health Department is monitoring Heat-Related Illness (HRI) cases in real time through the IHIP portal, while District Task Force meetings are being held regularly in coordination with departments such as Education, Labour, and Transport to implement effective heat action plans.

Appealing to the public to remain cautious, the Health Minister advised people to stay hydrated, wear light cotton clothes, avoid stepping out during peak afternoon hours, and consume water-rich fruits and drinks like ORS, lassi, and lemon water. He particularly urged elderly people, children, and outdoor workers to take extra precautions during the ongoing heatwave.

The department also warned citizens to seek immediate medical attention if they experience symptoms such as high body temperature, confusion, seizures, severe headache, nausea, or rapid heartbeat. Emergency helpline numbers 104, 108, and 112 have been activated for public assistance.
