Kolkata, 23 May (H.S.): The West Bengal government has revised the holiday schedule for Eid al-Adha (Bakrid), cancelling the previously announced two-day break and declaring a single government holiday on May 28.
According to a notification issued by Nabanna on Friday, all state government offices, institutions, and government-aided establishments will remain closed on Thursday, May 28, on the occasion of Eid-ul-Zoha.
A statement issued by the state finance department said that under an earlier order dated November 27, 2025, holidays had been declared for May 26, 2026, on the eve of Bakrid and May 27, 2026, for Eid-ul-Zoha. However, based on updated information regarding the moon sighting and festival date, Bakrid will now be observed on May 28.
As a result, the previously announced holidays on May 26 and 27 have been withdrawn. Government offices and institutions across the state will function normally on both days.
According to the state government’s holiday calendar, the next major public holidays will include Muharram on June 26, Rath Yatra on July 16, Independence Day on August 15, Fateha-Dwaz-Daham on August 26, and Raksha Bandhan on August 28.
The festive season in the state is expected to intensify from September with celebrations of Janmashtami, Vishwakarma Puja, and the beginning of the Durga Puja period. October will witness a series of holidays on the occasions of Gandhi Jayanti, Mahalaya, and Durga Puja festivities.
