Thiruvananthapuram, 21 May (H.S.):Kerala is expected to receive isolated heavy rainfall on Thursday, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a yellow alert for seven districts across the state. Authorities have also warned of thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds in several regions over the coming days.
The districts placed under yellow alert are Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki and Ernakulam. The weather department has forecast the possibility of isolated heavy rainfall in these areas and advised residents to remain cautious, particularly in low-lying and vulnerable locations.
According to IMD classifications, heavy rainfall refers to precipitation ranging between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm within a 24-hour period. Weather officials stated that isolated places across the state could witness intense rain spells accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning activity.
Strong winds with speeds ranging from 40 to 50 kmph are also likely in certain areas. Authorities have urged the public to exercise caution during thunderstorms and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense weather activity.
The India Meteorological Department has further indicated that Kerala and Mahe are likely to continue experiencing isolated rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds over the next few days.
Meteorologists attributed the prevailing weather conditions to a trough of low pressure extending from the southeast Arabian Sea to the central Bay of Bengal. The system stretches through Lakshadweep, northern Kerala, southern interior Karnataka and parts of Andhra Pradesh at an altitude between 3.1 km and 4.5 km above sea level, creating favourable conditions for widespread rainfall activity.
Meanwhile, the southwest monsoon is expected to arrive over Kerala around May 26, although meteorologists noted that the onset date may vary by up to four days earlier or later than forecast.
With the monsoon season approaching, authorities are expected to continue monitoring weather developments and issue updated advisories as conditions evolve.
