Hooghly, 21 May (H.S.): Surya Dey, councillor of Ward No. 18 of Dankuni Municipality and a Trinamool Congress leader, was arrested by Dankuni police in the early hours of Thursday. According to police sources, he will be produced before the Serampore court later in the day.

The police said the arrest was made in connection with an old case involving allegations of assault and criminal intimidation. The complainant alleged that the incident took place in the aftermath of the 2021 Assembly elections, but he could not file a written complaint at that time due to fear of the accused.

After the change in government, the complainant reportedly lodged a fresh complaint, following which police initiated an investigation. Based on the findings of the probe, the police arrested Surya Dey from his residence in Dankuni early Thursday morning.

Notably, Surya Dey had recently criticised the Election Commission after his name allegedly appeared as “dead” in the final SIR list. Later, allegations surfaced that he had himself managed to get his name included in the deceased list in connivance with the concerned BLO. The incident had triggered widespread political discussion in the area.
