New Delhi, May 21 (H.S.): Aston Villa ended a 30-year wait for major European silverware by winning the 2025–26 UEFA Europa League title with a commanding 3-0 victory over Germany’s Freiburg in the final played on Wednesday night.
The final, held at Tupras Stadium in Türkiye, saw Aston Villa dominate proceedings from the outset. Maintaining consistent possession and applying relentless pressure on Freiburg’s defence, the English side controlled the tempo of the match throughout.
Despite several attacking moves in the opening half, the deadlock remained intact until the 41st minute. Following a well-worked short-corner routine, Morgan Rogers delivered an excellent cross into the penalty area, where Youri Tielemans produced a superb volley to find the back of the net and hand Aston Villa a 1-0 lead.
Deep into first-half stoppage time, Emiliano Buendía doubled Villa’s advantage with a brilliant curling strike, giving the Premier League side a commanding 2-0 lead heading into the break.
Aston Villa continued their dominance in the second half and effectively sealed the contest in the 58th minute. Buendía delivered a dangerous cross into the box, which Morgan Rogers converted clinically to make it 3-0.
Freiburg failed to mount a comeback thereafter, allowing Aston Villa to comfortably secure the title.
This marks Aston Villa’s first major trophy since 1996, when the club defeated Leeds United to win the League Cup. Over the past three decades, the club came close to success on several occasions but failed to lift a major trophy until now.
Under the guidance of head coach Unai Emery, Aston Villa enjoyed an outstanding campaign this season. The club finished second during the league phase and advanced to the final after overcoming Lille, Bologna, and Nottingham Forest in the knockout rounds.
In the final, Youri Tielemans, Morgan Rogers, and Emiliano Buendía emerged as the standout performers for Aston Villa. Goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez also delivered an impressive performance, keeping a clean sheet with several crucial saves.
