Kolkata, 21 May (H.S.) : Repolling for the Falta Assembly constituency in South 24 Parganas district began peacefully on Thursday morning, with voters lining up outside polling booths from the early hours. Voting commenced at 7 a.m., and enthusiastic participation by residents created a festive atmosphere across the constituency.

The Election Commission has put extensive security arrangements in place to ensure free and fair polling.

A total of 35 companies of central forces have been deployed across the constituency, nearly double the strength used during the previous polling exercise. In addition, 30 Quick Response Teams have been kept on standby to deal with any untoward incidents.

However, shortly after polling began, reports emerged that Trinamool Congress agents were absent from several booths located near the residence of party candidate Jahangir Khan.

According to local sources, party agents were not present at at least two booths in the area.

It may be recalled that voting in the Falta constituency had earlier taken place during the second phase of the Assembly elections on April 29. However, following allegations of large-scale irregularities and tampering in Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), the Election Commission ordered cancellation of the entire polling process in the constituency and announced a repoll.

Meanwhile, Trinamool Congress candidate Jahangir Khan had announced his withdrawal from the contest 48 hours before the repoll. Despite this, his name continues to remain on the Electronic Voting Machine in accordance with Election Commission rules.
