Kamal Sarkar, former chairman of Buniadpur Municipality and a Trinamool Congress leader, was arrested on Thursday afternoon on charges of taking huge amounts of money in connection with a land-related matter.

According to police sources, the accused leader is being produced before the court later in the day.

Local sources said that a few months ago, a person had approached Kamal Sarkar seeking assistance in a land-related issue. It has been alleged that Sarkar took several lakh rupees from the complainant on the promise of getting the work done.

However, even after a long period, the work was allegedly not completed and the money was not returned. The complainant then approached the police and lodged a formal complaint against the former municipal chairman.
