Thiruvananthapuram,21 May (H.S.): Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader V. Muraleedharan on Thursday asserted that the proceedings of the Kerala Legislative Assembly would reveal who the “real Opposition” in the state is, claiming that the BJP would emerge as a strong and genuine opposition force in the House.
Muraleedharan made the remarks while speaking to reporters ahead of taking oath as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) during the first sitting of the newly constituted Kerala Assembly. He was elected from the Kazhakkoottam Assembly constituency as a BJP candidate in the recently concluded Kerala Assembly elections.
Responding to questions regarding the BJP’s role in the Assembly, Muraleedharan said the party would establish its identity through its conduct inside the House and by consistently raising issues affecting the people of the state.
“When Assembly proceedings begin, everyone will understand who the real Opposition is. We will be the genuine Opposition, while the others are only a pseudo-opposition. Once the Assembly starts functioning, people will see how things unfold,” Muraleedharan said.
He also alleged that the major political fronts in Kerala had traditionally cooperated with one another despite projecting themselves as rivals.
“For all these years, both sides have sat on opposite benches and worked together. That will not continue anymore. The Bharatiya Janata Party will work by upholding the interests of the people and will function with the development of Kerala as its priority,” he added.
Muraleedharan’s remarks come at a time when the BJP is seeking to strengthen its political presence in Kerala following its improved electoral performance in the state.
In the recent Assembly elections, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) secured victories in three constituencies. Apart from Kazhakkoottam, BJP-backed candidates also emerged victorious in Chathannoor and Nemom constituencies. B. B. Gopakumar won from Chathannoor, while BJP state president Rajeev Chandrasekhar registered victory from Nemom.
The BJP leadership has projected the results as a significant step in expanding the party’s influence in Kerala politics and strengthening its legislative presence in the state Assembly.
