New Delhi, May 19 (H.S.): All-rounder Aaron Hardie has been appointed as the new captain of Western Australia’s Sheffield Shield team. He will take over the leadership role from Sam Whiteman ahead of the 2026–27 season, as Western Australia’s red-ball setup undergoes a period of transition.
Following the departure of three-time Sheffield Shield-winning head coach Adam Voges, former Australian leg-spinner Beau Casson has been appointed as the new head coach of the Sheffield Shield and One-Day Cup teams. Casson had previously served the side for several years as batting coach.
During Voges’ tenure, Whiteman captained Western Australia in 38 Sheffield Shield matches. Under his leadership, the team secured back-to-back Sheffield Shield titles in the 2022–23 and 2023–24 seasons. He became only the fourth captain after John Inverarity, Graeme Wood and Tom Moody to guide Western Australia to more than one Sheffield Shield triumph.
However, Whiteman has signed a long-term contract with English county side Yorkshire County Cricket Club and, due to his dual citizenship, will now represent Western Australia as an overseas player. As a result, the team management decided to implement a new leadership structure.
The 27-year-old Hardie had long been regarded as a future captain. He led the Australia A side against New Zealand A in 2023 and also captained the team against the England Lions in 2025. Additionally, during the 2023–24 Big Bash League season, he captained the Perth Scorchers in the absence of Ashton Turner.
Reacting to his appointment, Hardie said in a statement released by Western Australia, “It is an incredible honour to be appointed captain of Western Australia’s Sheffield Shield team. This team means a great deal to me. We have a fantastic culture and an outstanding group of players. I’m excited to work alongside Beau Casson and the entire squad heading into the new season.”
He added, “I’ve learned a tremendous amount from the leaders and players around me over the past few years. I now look forward to leading in my own way and creating an environment where the entire group can perform at its best.”
Head coach Casson also expressed confidence in Hardie’s leadership abilities. “Aaron Hardie is a highly respected figure within the group. His preparation, composure under pressure, and the way he conducts himself with teammates make him an outstanding choice as captain,” Casson said.
Casson also praised Sam Whiteman’s leadership, adding that his role within the team would continue to remain significant moving forward.
Notably, Hardie remains closely involved with Australia’s white-ball setup and could miss some Sheffield Shield fixtures due to international commitments. Following an impressive campaign in the Pakistan Super League, he has also been named in Australia’s T20 squad for the upcoming tour of Bangladesh in June.
