Ameobic encephalitis

Kozhikode, 15 May (H.S.): A fresh case of amoebic meningoencephalitis, commonly referred to as amoebic brain infection, has been confirmed in Kozhikode district, raising renewed health concerns in Kerala. A 19-year-old youth from Feroke, who was working in Alappuzha, has tested positive for the rare but dangerous infection.

The young man is currently undergoing treatment at the Government Medical College Hospital, Kozhikode. Health officials said his condition is stable and he is responding to treatment.

Just a day earlier, a nine-year-old boy from Kottoor in Kozhikode district was also diagnosed with the same disease and admitted to the Medical College Hospital. Doctors treating both patients stated that their health condition remains satisfactory and they are under close observation.

Amoebic meningoencephalitis is a rare but serious infection caused by free-living amoeba, usually found in contaminated freshwater bodies such as ponds, lakes, and stagnant water sources. The infection affects the brain and nervous system and can become life-threatening if not detected early. Symptoms generally include severe headache, fever, vomiting, neck stiffness, confusion, and seizures.

Kerala has witnessed several cases and deaths linked to the disease in recent years, particularly among children and young people who had bathed in contaminated water bodies. In 2024 and 2025, multiple fatalities were reported from districts including Kozhikode, Malappuram, Kannur, and Alappuzha, prompting the Health Department to issue repeated warnings regarding bathing in unsafe ponds and stagnant water.

Following the recent cases, health authorities have once again urged the public to exercise caution while entering freshwater bodies, especially during the monsoon season. Officials advised people to avoid swimming or diving in stagnant or poorly maintained water sources and recommended immediate medical attention if symptoms appear after water exposure.

The Health Department is closely monitoring both patients while preventive awareness campaigns are also being intensified across the state.
