Kolkata, 15 May (H.S.) : Senior Trinamool Congress leader and former municipal chairman Chanchal Khara was arrested in Tamluk of East Medinipur district on charges including threatening women, harassment, and illegal extortion, triggering political reactions in the region.

According to police sources, several women and local traders from the Tamluk municipal area had lodged complaints against Khara. He has been accused of extorting money by intimidating people and allegedly threatening a woman with serious consequences. The complainant also alleged that despite earlier complaints, no action had initially been taken, forcing her to endure prolonged mental harassment.

During the investigation, police detained Khara and questioned him for nearly 24 hours before formally arresting him. Investigators have also reportedly found information related to other serious allegations against him, including attempted murder, forgery, and cheating.

Supporters of Chanchal Khara, however, dismissed the allegations as politically motivated. They claimed that he was being deliberately targeted following the change in political power in the state.

The arrest has intensified the political atmosphere in Tamluk and nearby areas. Police said the investigation is continuing and further legal action is being taken in connection with the case.
