New Delhi, 15 May (H.S.):
Amid the ongoing crisis in West Asia, state‑owned oil marketing companies have raised petrol and diesel prices by ₹3 per litre. CNG rates have also been increased by ₹2 per kilogram. The new prices have come into effect today. This is the first rise in petrol‑diesel prices in nearly four years.
In Delhi, petrol has risen from ₹94.77 to ₹97.77 per litre, while diesel has gone up from ₹87.67 to ₹90.67 per litre. Fuel prices have also jumped in metros such as Kolkata, Mumbai and Chennai.
In Kolkata, petrol is up by ₹3.29 to ₹108.74 per litre. In the country’s financial capital Mumbai, petrol has climbed ₹3.14 to ₹106.68 per litre. In Chennai, petrol has risen by ₹2.83 and the new price is ₹103.67 per litre.
Diesel in Kolkata has been increased by ₹3.11 and is now selling at ₹95.13 per litre. In Mumbai, diesel is costlier by ₹3.11 and is priced at ₹93.14 per litre. Chennai has seen a ₹2.86 rise in diesel, which now retails at ₹95.25 per litre.
At a Bharat Petroleum pump in Preet Vihar, Delhi, a customer said, “What can we do about it? These things come from other countries. They are not produced here. So whatever steps the government is taking are in the national interest.” Opposition parties reacted sharply to the hike. The Congress posted on X, “Inflation man has unleashed a hunt on the public.” Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav quipped that if people want to move forward, a bicycle is the only option.
Experts say the rise in petrol, diesel and CNG prices was made as fuel retailers face mounting losses due to rising global crude oil prices. International crude is trading at about $106 per barrel.
