Guwahati, 13 May (HS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Assam shortly after the BJP-led NDA retained power in the state has reinforced the Centre’s continued focus on Assam’s development agenda and infrastructure expansion in the Northeast.
By attending the swearing-in ceremony of the new Assam government, the Prime Minister underlined the Centre’s continued focus on the state, which has increasingly become central to New Delhi’s strategic and economic plans for the Northeast region. The visit also reflects the importance being given to Assam as a gateway to the Northeast and a key driver of regional growth.
The visit is also expected to boost confidence among investors and infrastructure agencies, with several major projects already announced or launched in recent months. These include the Shillong–Silchar high-speed corridor, Assam Mala 3.0 road expansion programme, Northeast Gas Grid, railway doubling works, hydroelectric projects and the expansion of refinery infrastructure at Numaligarh.
Officials and analysts believe the Centre’s emphasis on connectivity, transport and industrial growth could significantly transform the state’s economy over the coming years. Improved road, rail and waterways networks are expected to strengthen links between Upper Assam, Barak Valley and neighbouring states while also enhancing trade opportunities with Southeast Asian countries.
The infrastructure push is likely to generate employment opportunities across sectors such as construction, logistics, transport and energy. Faster freight movement and improved connectivity are also expected to benefit agriculture, small industries and tourism in the region.
The ongoing infrastructure expansion, including Brahmaputra bridge projects, expressways and railway development, is being viewed as part of the broader effort to accelerate economic growth and connectivity in the Northeast.
