Kolkata, 11 May (H.S.) : The Chinese Consulate General in Kolkata has once again cautioned Chinese nationals against illegally entering India from Nepal following the recent detention of a Chinese citizen near the India-Nepal border in Bihar.
In a statement issued on Monday, the consulate advised Chinese nationals to strictly avoid crossing into Indian territory without valid travel documents and reminded them that an Indian visa is mandatory for entry into the country.
The consulate noted that the India-Nepal border remains an open frontier with relatively few boundary markers, increasing the possibility of accidental crossings, especially for Chinese nationals travelling in Nepal’s border regions. It warned that those entering India without valid visas could be detained by Indian border security forces or police personnel.
The statement further highlighted that Indian laws prescribe strict punishment for illegal entry. It said that irrespective of whether the crossing is intentional or accidental, violators could face detention, judicial proceedings, prison terms ranging from two to eight years, and monetary penalties. The consulate also stated that securing bail in such cases is often difficult.
Chinese nationals staying in Nepal were urged to avoid travelling close to the India-Nepal border and not to rely on local guides or take unnecessary risks that could lead to serious legal consequences and financial losses.
The consulate also reminded travellers that even holders of valid Indian visas are required to obtain prior written permission from Indian authorities before entering restricted areas. It further advised Chinese nationals to leave India before the expiry of their visas to avoid legal action for overstaying.
The advisory comes days after the arrest of a Chinese national near the Jogbani check post along the India-Nepal border in Bihar’s Araria district.
According to Sashastra Seema Bal officials, the accused has been identified as Zhou Huan, a 41-year-old resident of China’s Hunan province. He was intercepted during routine surveillance operations by personnel of the SSB’s 56 Battalion.
