Guwahati, 10 May (HS). The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in Assam on Sunday unanimously elected Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma as the leader of the NDA Legislature Party, paving the way for the formation of the government for a third consecutive term in the state.

The meeting of the NDA Legislature Party was held at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Bhawan, the Assam BJP headquarters in Guwahati, in the presence of BJP’s central observers, former national president JP Nadda and Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, who attended the meeting as co-observer.

After holding consultations with the newly elected legislators, JP Nadda formally announced the name of Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma as the leader of the NDA Legislature Party. The proposal for Sarma’s name was moved and supported by eight senior legislators, including Ranjit Kumar Das, Biswajit Daimary, Ajanta Neog, Rameswar Teli, Rajdeep Roy, Ashok Singhal, Pijush Hazarika and Chakradhar Gogoi.

Soon after the announcement, the BJP headquarters reverberated with slogans of “Bharat Mata Ki Jai” and “Jai Shri Ram” as party workers and supporters celebrated the decision.

Several senior leaders were present on the dais during the meeting, including Assam BJP president Dilip Saikia, the state BJP in-charge, the party’s organisational general secretary GR Ravindra Raju, AGP president Atul Bora and BPF leader Rihon Daimary, among others.

In the recently concluded 2026 Assam Assembly elections, the BJP secured victory in 82 out of 126 seats. Along with its allies — the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), which won 10 seats, and the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), which also secured 10 seats — the NDA registered a massive mandate with a total of 102 seats.

A festive atmosphere prevailed at the BJP headquarters throughout the day ahead of the formal government formation process. The swearing-in ceremony of the new government is scheduled to be held on May 12 at the Khanapara playground in Guwahati, where preparations are in the final stage.

Following his election as the leader of the NDA Legislature Party, Dr Sarma is set to leave for Lok Bhavan to meet the Governor and stake claim to form the new government in Assam.----------
