Agartala, 01 May (HS): Severe storms sweeping across Tripura over the past two days have claimed two lives and left four others injured, while causing extensive destruction to homes, crops and electricity infrastructure, officials confirmed on Friday.
The casualties include a five-year-old child who died after a mud house collapsed at Radhanagar in Unakoti district, where his sibling also sustained injuries. In another incident, a man from Longtarai Valley in Dhalai district lost his life after being struck by lightning amid the turbulent weather conditions.
Disaster Management official sources said that apart from these incidents, three more individuals were injured in separate storm-related mishaps across different parts of the state.
The impact of the storm system has been widespread, with authorities reporting damage to 3,999 houses, including 179 that were completely destroyed. In response, the state government has disbursed ₹79.59 lakh as interim relief to affected families.
Relief measures were initiated promptly, with four camps set up to accommodate displaced residents. Around 245 families took shelter in these camps, though officials stated that most have since returned home as conditions improved.
Power infrastructure also suffered significant damage, with 130 electric poles uprooted, disrupting electricity supply in multiple areas. Restoration efforts are ongoing, particularly in remote locations.
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall in isolated areas of Sepahijala and South Tripura districts, keeping the administration on high alert for further developments.-----------
