Chandigarh, 01 May (H.S.):The first case under Punjab’s newly enacted anti-sacrilege law was registered on Friday in Muktsar Sahib district. The Punjab government had passed the Jagat Jyoti Shri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar (Amendment) Act, 2026 in the state assembly on April 13 on the occasion of Baisakhi. The law received approval from Governor Gulab Chand Kataria about a week later, following which an official notification was issued by the state government.

After the law came into effect, the first FIR was lodged in Malout town of Muktsar Sahib district after torn pages of Shri Gutka Sahib were found in Ward No. 10.

DSP Harjeet Singh said the torn pages were discovered in a street in Ward No. 10. Members of the Sikh community respectfully collected the pages and took them to a nearby Gurdwara Sahib before informing the police.

Police have registered a case against unidentified persons and launched an investigation into the matter. Officials also assured the gathered Sikh community at the Gurdwara that strict action would be taken against those responsible. Sikh community leader Sukhdev Singh strongly condemned the incident and said the community would wait for police action for 10 days before deciding its next course of action.
