South 24 Paragnas, 01 May (H.S.): Tension flared up again in the Falta Assembly constituency following allegations of assault on BJP workers in the Hashimnagar area on Friday, officials said.

On information, Diamond Harbour police district observer, IPS officer Ajaypal Sharma, rushed to the spot. BJP candidate Debangshu Panda and Trinamool Congress candidate Jahangir Khan also reached the site.

BJP workers blocked National Highway 117, alleging that the local Trinamool panchayat chief led an attack on them when they protested against being prevented from casting their votes. Several party workers were allegedly assaulted in the incident.

The police from Falta Police Station along with central forces reached the spot and held talks with the protesters, assuring them of security. The blockade was later lifted following the assurance, officials said.

The BJP has demanded re-polling in the area over the incident. However, the Trinamool Congress denied the allegations, with its local leader IsrafiI Sardar stating that the party had no involvement in the incident.

According to Election Commission sources, of the 77 booths where re-polling has been sought, 32 are in the Falta Assembly segment. The constituency falls under the Diamond Harbour Lok Sabha seat, represented by Abhishek Banerjee.

The situation is currently under control following police intervention, officials added.
