Thiruvananthapuram, 01 May (H.S.): Even as exit polls predicting a victory for the United Democratic Front (UDF) have energized the Opposition camp in Kerala, an internal tussle within the Congress over the Chief Ministerial post has escalated into a full-blown power struggle.

The situation has sharpened following the Indian Union Muslim League’s open backing of V. D. Satheesan for the top post. The move has reportedly irked rival camps led by K. C. Venugopal and Ramesh Chennithala, who are now closely watching each other’s next steps amid the growing uncertainty.

Sources indicate that supporters of Chennithala are particularly wary of Venugopal’s political positioning, especially as speculation mounts over the latter’s ambitions. Adding to the intrigue, reports have emerged that a documentary project centred on Venugopal’s political journey has been abruptly put on hold following directions from the Congress high command. Titled “KC @ 50”, the documentary was intended to chronicle Venugopal’s 50 years in public life and had already been filmed extensively in districts including Alappuzha and Kannur. The project was reportedly on track for a May 1 release before being halted.

Within party circles, Chennithala’s camp is said to believe that they could consolidate broader support if Venugopal opts out of the Chief Ministerial race. However, indications from Venugopal’s supporters suggest that he is unlikely to step aside.

Meanwhile, Satheesan’s camp remains confident, banking on the backing of key allies such as the IUML and projecting him as the consensus candidate should the UDF secure a mandate.

With the election results due soon, the leadership question threatens to overshadow the Opposition alliance’s electoral momentum, setting the stage for a high-stakes political showdown within the Congress.
