Indian equities opened higher but quickly succumbed to selling pressure during early trade, with benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty exhibiting sharp swings between buyers and sellers.
Indices Turn Negative by 10 AM
The BSE Sensex, after opening 157.98 points stronger at 73,477.53—peaking at 73,588.75 and dipping to 72,790.49—traded 518.10 points or 0.70% lower at 72,801.45 by 10 AM. Similarly, the NSE Nifty started 67.20 points up at 22,780.30, hit a high of 22,798.25 and low of 22,561.90, before falling 148.65 points or 0.65% to 22,564.45.
Top Gainers and Losers
Among heavyweight stocks, Trent Ltd surged up to 4.06%, with Wipro, Hindalco Industries, Coal India, and Tech Mahindra gaining 1.45–4.06%. In contrast, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Reliance Industries, Max Healthcare, InterGlobe Aviation, and Sun Pharmaceutical declined 1.23–1.42%.
Broader Market Dynamics
Of 2,765 actively traded stocks, 1,176 posted gains while 1,589 suffered losses. Sensex's 30 components saw 11 in green and 19 in red; Nifty50 had 17 gainers against 33 decliners. Markets had closed higher last Thursday—Sensex up 185.23 points (0.25%) at 73,319.55 and Nifty up 33.70 points (0.15%) at 22,713.10—before the Good Friday holiday.
