Kathmandu, 05 April (H.S.):

Nepal's government has launched a sweeping digital offensive against illegal online betting, with the Nepal Telecommunication Authority (NTA) blocking over 7,000 related apps and URLs in coordination with ISPs.

This follows Cabinet approval of the 100-point 'Governance Reform Action Plan' (Point 42), mandating 24-hour identification and shutdown of gambling platforms. NTA activated technical teams to scan and seal suspicious sites swiftly.

NTA Deputy Director Surya Prasad Lamichhane reported 50+ complaints via email, calls, and messages in the past week alone, prompting accelerated enforcement.

Under Muluki Criminal Code Section 125(4), betting is a serious offense: full seizure of stakes, up to 1-year jail, and ₹10,000 fines. Advertising bans further tighten the noose.

Authorities warn of strict action against users or operators, urging reports to curb capital flight and addiction.
