Washington, 30 April (H.S.): President Donald Trump on Wednesday announced that the United States is evaluating a possible reduction in its military presence in Germany, escalating transatlantic friction triggered by his public rebuke of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz over the ongoing war with Iran.

Trump's declaration on Truth Social came one day after Merz asserted that Iran was humiliating the U.S. in negotiations to resolve the conflict, questioning Washington's exit strategy.

The president fired back, accusing Merz of naively tolerating Iran's nuclear ambitions, a claim that mischaracterizes Berlin's firm opposition to Tehran acquiring atomic weapons.

Approximately 38,000 U.S. troops are stationed in Germany, a key hub for European operations.Trump, who previously attempted a partial withdrawal during his first term, frames the review as a swift decision-making process, potentially retaliatory against perceived allied disloyalty amid the Iran standoff. The move aligns with his administration's pressure tactics, as seen in criticisms of NATO members for insufficient aid in the Hormuz blockade, which Trump vows to sustain despite Iran's economic strain.

Such a drawdown could strain NATO cohesion, especially with concerns over Russian intentions toward eastern flanks like Estonia. While Trump has invested heavily—$25 billion per Pentagon estimates—in the Iran campaign, including port blockades, European economic fallout from disrupted oil flows has amplified allied critiques.
