Madrid, 30 April (H.S.):
The first‑leg encounter between Atlético Madrid and Arsenal in the 2026 UEFA Champions League semi‑final ended in a 1–1 draw. The match was tightly contested from a tactical standpoint, with limited goal‑scoring opportunities for both sides.
Arsenal took the lead in the first half. In the 44th minute, Viktor Gyökeres was awarded a penalty, which he converted clinically to put his team ahead 1–0.
Atlético Madrid responded after the break. In the 56th minute, following a VAR check, a handball by Ben White was penalised and Julián Álvarez stepped up to convert the resulting spot‑kick, bringing the scorelevel at 1–1.
After the equaliser, both teams created chances but were unable to add a second goal. Anto Griezmann’s shot struck the crossbar, while a second Arsenal penalty was awarded and then overturned on VAR review, adding to the match’s drama.
Atlético Madrid captain Koke said:
“We gave our all. The opening goal came from a penalty, which felt slightly questionable to me. We had opportunities to win the match, but now the tie will be decided in the second leg. Their defence is strong, and their forwards are very quick. We did not make the most of our chances. We hope the next match in London is not our last of this campaign.”
Arsenal’s goalscorer Viktor Gyökeres said:
“In the first half we controlled the match quite well. They raised their game in the second half and perhaps deserved their goal. Overall, it was a difficult contest. The home pitch and the support of the crowd will make the next match in London different. We will have to give our very best.”
The second leg between the two teams will be played on 5 May in London. The winner of this tie will advance to the final, where they will face either Paris Saint‑Germain or Bayern Munich. Currently, PSG hold a 5–4 advantage from the first leg of the other semi‑final.
