
Murshidabad, 03 April (H.S.):
Firearms and ammunition were seized from multiple locations in West Bengal ahead of the upcoming elections, with several persons arrested, the police said on Friday.
In Murshidabad district, the police recovered a country-made pistol and two rounds of ammunition from a suspect during a raid in Sadanandapur area under Hariharpara police station on Thursday night. The accused, identified as Zillar Sheikh, was arrested and produced before a court in Berhampore on Friday, where the police sought seven days’ custody.
The police said the operation was carried out based on specific inputs, and further investigation is underway to ascertain if others are involved in the case.
In a separate incident, two firearms and three rounds of cartridges were seized from Bhatpara following a search operation conducted early Thursday. Two persons have been arrested in connection with the recovery.
Meanwhile, in Nadia district, a firearm along with ammunition and sharp weapons was recovered during a raid in Taherpur police station area on Tuesday night. One person has been arrested in that case.
Police officials said security has been tightened across the state ahead of the elections, with intensified naka checking and raids being carried out at various locations. Further investigations are in progress, they added.
