Thiruvananthapuram, 29 April (H.S.):Widespread summer showers are expected across Kerala on Wednesday, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting moderate to heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds in several parts of the state.

According to officials, rainfall activity is likely to intensify during the afternoon hours, bringing much-needed relief from the prevailing heatwave conditions. The return of summer rains is expected to ease the soaring temperatures that have gripped many districts over the past few weeks.

On Monday, Pathanamthitta recorded 40 mm of rainfall, indicating the early onset of widespread pre-monsoon showers. In view of the improving weather conditions, the IMD has withdrawn earlier heatwave warnings issued for parts of the state.

However, the department has cautioned that isolated heavy rainfall is likely to occur in certain regions over the next few days. A yellow alert has been issued for Kannur and Kasaragod districts on Wednesday, warning of heavy rainfall at isolated places.

The alert will extend to Pathanamthitta, Idukki, and Wayanad districts on Thursday, while Alappuzha, Kottayam, and Ernakulam districts are expected to come under yellow alert on Saturday.

Authorities have also warned of the possibility of lightning strikes and strong winds during thunderstorms. Residents have been advised to remain vigilant, avoid open areas during lightning activity, and take necessary precautions to ensure safety.

Disaster management officials are closely monitoring the situation, particularly in districts prone to waterlogging and localized flooding. People living in vulnerable areas have been urged to stay updated with official weather bulletins and follow safety advisories issued by local authorities.
